:APPRAISAL: This appraisal is written about one Navajo basket witnessed by me on this date of February 22, 2007 and is currently part of the W & V Miller estate of Baytown, Texas. {Basket photos attached} This basket is hand-woven in the traditional style of the Dine {Navajo} Nation Native Americans of the Southwest. :Detailed Basket Description: This basket _measures approximately 22” across_. Commonly referred to as a pictorial basket the central motif/theme for this basket artwork is a variation of two steam locomotives or trains. Locomotive motifs are well known to the indigenous, Native American weavers {esp. Navajo basket makers} of the Southwestern United States and is often replicated and/or altered by them. In excess of ten different colors were used by the artist in the creation of the particular basket. All the materials used in the fabrication of the basket are natural materials commonly used in the art of basket making {esp. by the Navajo} {See photos for design, color and
construction details} This basket can be attributed to the well known basket maker Sally Black of Monument Valley, Arizona. Ms. Black is a 4/4 member of the Navajo nation, Arizona. The basket was created by Ms. Black in the early 2000’s The basket is in excellent – like new condition. The current “fair market value” of this Navajo pictorial basket as of this date as determined by this appraiser is _$3000.00_ Current value determination is made by the availability of this type of artwork throughout the United States at various retail outlets.
